The ExtremeX global climate model experiment: investigating thermodynamic and dynamic processes contributing to weather and climate extremes

چکیده

Abstract. The mechanisms leading to the occurrence of extreme weather and climate events are varied complex. They generally encompass a combination dynamic thermodynamic processes, as well drivers external system, such anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions land use change. Here we present ExtremeX multi-model intercomparison experiment, which was designed investigate contribution processes recent extremes. numerical experiments performed with three Earth system models: CESM, MIROC, EC-Earth. include control interactive atmosphere surface conditions, wherein atmospheric circulation, soil moisture, or both constrained using observation-based data. temporal evolution magnitude temperature anomalies during heatwaves represented in atmosphere. However, mean climatological biases precipitation not greatly reduced any due persistent newly introduced biases. This highlights importance error compensations tuning standard model versions. To show one possible application, is used identify main warm spells. results reveal that circulation patterns moisture conditions substantially contribute these events. Soil effects particularly important tropics, monsoon areas, Great Plains United States, whereas major other midlatitude high-latitude regions.

WCRP Grand Challenge: Understanding and Predicting Weather and Climate Extremes

Weather and climate extremes are an inherent part of climate. There is overwhelming evidence that the climate and its extremes are changing. As extremes affect every aspect of our society, decisionand policy makers, and stakeholders are increasingly asking for reliable predictions of extremes on time scales from days to seasons and centuries. To meet this societal need, the world climate resear...

Climate extremes and climate change: The Russian heat wave and other climate extremes of 2010

[1] A global perspective is developed on a number of high impact climate extremes in 2010 through diagnostic studies of the anomalies, diabatic heating, and global energy and water cycles that demonstrate relationships among variables and across events. Natural variability, especially ENSO, and global warming from human influences together resulted in very high sea surface temperatures (SSTs) i...

Global climate change: predicting the weather.

In Greek mythology, Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to humans. His action infuriated Zeus, who then chained the giant to a rock in the ocean where he was lashed by the seas and burned by the sun. Today, humans' ability to capture energy and use it as we wish may be leading us toward a similar fate. Records from glacial ice cores and direct air sampling confirm that since the ind...

Model error in weather and climate forecasting

We review various interpretations of the phrase “model error”, choosing to focus here on how to quantify and minimise the cumulative effect of model “imperfections” that either have not been eliminated because of incomplete observations/understanding or cannot be eliminated because they are intrinsic to the model’s structure. We will not provide a recipe for eliminating these imperfections, but...
